Beavers Show Fight But Succumb to #10 Kansas

Oregon State fought hard in a road game tonight against the #10 ranked Kansas Jahhawks, but came up short, 84-78.

Kansas shot 60 percent from the field for the game but somehow let the Beavers hang around. OSU twice rallied in the second half, even closing the lead to three points in the final minutes before the final whistle.

Short-Handed Beavers Get Big Win

Saturday's 36-26 win over ASU in Corvallis proved that the Beaver's can and did respond to adversity in order to win when they must.

All-world cornerback Jordan Poyer didn't play. Starting RB Storm Woods played just the first series and former starting QB Sean Mannion held a clipboard and watched Cody Vaz ably direct the OSU offense. The result... a slow, somewhat disjointed first half followed by a dominant second half and a convincing win. While the scoreboard showed that OSU won by only ten points, the game wasn't that close for most of the second half.

On Track:
Big plays on offense
Defense bottles up a very mobile QB
Ground game does the job
Win the turnover battle

Cause for Concern:
O-Line gives up too many sacks
Slow (could have been disastrous) start

Former Beaver Wins MLB Gold Glove

Former Oregon State second baseman Darwin Barney won the Rawlings Gold Glove Award for the National League this week. The award, given to the top player at each position was Barney's first and capped off a great year in the field.

Barney's sterling defense yielded him a .997 fielding percent which was tops in the NL. What's more, this year he set a new record with a 141-game errorless streak. The streak lasted 1,154 1/3 innings and ran through April 17.

Great job Darwin. Congrats!!

Happy Halloween

Have a safe and happy halloween. Another good reason to wear ORANGE.

The Great Pumpkin

UW Recap

Last week's poll on BeaverFanOnline asked how Sean Mannion's return to the lineup would affect the offense. Boy, was that prophetic!

As we all saw, Mannion's return did affect the game. While some have said he wasn't sharp, tried to do too much too soon or simply had a bad game, the result was not good. The offense wasn't able to move the ball enough in the first half and the interceptions squandered field position and what opportunities we could create for ourselves.

The second half was a different story entirely. The offense moved the ball, hit big plays and helped control the game. Unfortunately, more interceptions by Mannion and Washington's energy and big plays was too much to overcome.

The $64,000 question of course is now Mannion or Vaz? Vaz got his shot late in the game last week. It impacted the end of that game Seattle and will certainly impact what the Beavers do on offense going forward.

Prediction: Pain

When asked for his prediction of the outcome in the big bout in Rocky III, villan Clubber Lang answers simply...

"Pain!"

If you want to talk about how good of a line was or how great that film was we can. Today I'd rather talk about what I think the Beavers can inflict on Washington Saturday night in Seattle.

This year's Beavers have done a great job of growing and doing enough each week to seize control of a game and get the win. What's most important is that they have changed the brand of football they play and the manner in which they play it. Physicality, controlling the line of scrimmage and controlling the clock lead to WINS. I don't see any reason that won't continue this week.

Another night game, another road conference tilt? You bet! But our Beavers have shown they are up for any challenge. If do most of these:

Play physical and control the line of scrimmage
Run the ball for 100 yards or more
Keep Sean Mannion upright and give him time
Stretch the field on offense
Pressure Washington QB Keith Price
Control the clock
Win the turnover battle

They will win...

I say it will be 24-14 Beavers!
