Josh Hamilton Goes Hog Wild

I hope you had a chance to see the Home Run Derby last night. If you didn't - Josh Hamilton of Texas went crazy in the first round and set a record with 28 dingers. More than a few where tape measure shots... close to 520 feet. He was clearly trying to hit the ball "OUT" of Yankee Stadium.

He ended up getting second overall but what a great 10 minutes.

Wow! Again, what a great display of hitting.

Beaver Hoops Taken To Task In the Jungle

File this one in the "As if things can't get any worse" category....

Jim Rome today spent a few moments blasting the Beavers on his live radio program, "The Jim Rome Show".

The Beavers are suffering through a horrible men's hoops season. Winless in Pac-10 play, the Beaver players for some reason went hostile this weekend before their game against Washington this weekend. Apparently, five OSU players disrupted the UW shoot-around on Friday and called out the UW players. They were reported as saying something to effect of 'Don't disrespect us in spite of our record'. I can only guess that the Beavers were looking for some extra motivation before the next day's game. Well, it didn't work as the Huskies won by more than 30 points.

Rome was quoted as saying, "Back to the shallow end Beavers". The hits just keep on coming!

Trouble In Red Sox Outfield?

While Red Sox fans and OSU fans in particular have celebrated heartilly this offseason, it looks like all is not well. Spring training is underway and centerfileder Coco Crisp who was supplanted by Jacoby Ellsbury late in the season and throughout the playoffs is grumbling. At issue is Crisp's demotion to the bench and his desire to remain in the starting lineup. Ellsbury, the heralded young star from Madras, Ore. and Oregon State made a huge jump last year from Double A ball to the starting lineup. Ellsbury batted .353 last year and was huge at the top of the lineup as the Sox won the World Series.

I didn't die but I have been on hiatus for the past month or so. My self imposed vacation had alot to do with Oregon State's struggles through the 2007-08 basketball season. I guess 0-for-2008 in the Pac-10 will do that.

Beavers Finish 2007 at #25

Congrats to the Beavers on a great season. While things didn't look good during the rocky early season, Oregon State finished with a 9-4 record punctuated by the 21-14 win over Maryland in the Emerald Bowl. I guess the 34-7 loss to Cincinatti and that disastorous finish at home against UCLA went by the wayside.

OSU finished the year ranked #25 in the final AP poll of 2007. USC (#3), ASU (#16), Oregon (#23) were the other Pac-10 teams to finish 2007 nationally ranked. This is the second consecutive year the team finished in the top 25 and makes two of three during the Mike Riley era (II).

We will have more on the numbers later, but there certainly was alot to like.

OSU won seven of the final eight games.
OSU beat #2 Cal on the road in thrilling fashion.
The Beavers beat Oregon at Eugene for the first time in a decade.

The Beaver D finished the year allowing just 70 yards per game: best in the NCAA. They also finished in the top 10 in total yards allowed and first in tackle for loss yardage and third in the NCAA in sacks.

Cleveland's Andreson to be shopped?

First things first: Congratulations to Derek Anderson and the Browns on a truly good season. We won't call it a great one as the Browns couldn't quite make it to the playoffs. That said, Anderson's run from waiver wire pick up to starting quarterback was truly fun to watch. DA lead the team to a win this past weeka and they finished at 10-6. Unfortunately that wasn't enough to get them into the playoffs for the first time this decade.

Word from head coach Romeo Crennel yesterday was that the Browns may now be ready to entertain trade offers for the former Oregon State signal caller who was 10-5 this year as a starter.

"If anybody's interested in him, we'll just have to see how it goes," said Crennel. "Sometimes people can make you an offer and you can say, 'No, I think I'm going to stick with what I've got.' Sometimes they make you an offer and you say, 'Oooh!' So we'll see how it goes."

I hope you all had a nice Christmas and are ready to feast on college football this week. I haven't posted much this past week with the run-up to Christmas. It was very traumatic with two kids, but we made it through in fine fashion. My wife and kids got most everything they wanted from Santa. I got a nice pair of golf shoes and some other trinkets. Back luck for me on the 24th as I dropped my blackberry into a fountain at the mall. I've since recovered.

Former Beaver Makes Pro Bowl

While some of you in Beaver Nation may believe that Derek Anderson got snubbed when the news was relased yesterday that he didn't make the NFL Pro Bowl I take a different view. Yes, the ride with DA this year has been great. Heck... it turned me into a Cleveland Browns fan and that ain't easy to do. But the NFL and the lamest of the many all star games... AKA the Pro Bowl is really a popularity contest. You have to pay your dues and you can't do that with just one good year.

The news was better for only one other former Beaver and that was TJ Houshmandzedah. Congrats to TJ on a great year and a nice honor. I suppose we all knew he could play at a high level, but 100+ catches and 11 TD's? That's consistent.

Ahhh....But what could have been in the NFL this year for our former players??? Let's assume TJ still has a great year although some say that he gets his due to the constant attention opposing defenses pay to the Ocho... That's one in the Pro Bowl. Let's also assume that Chad was able to break free more often and put up the same numbers he has the past three years... Two. How about if Stephen Jackson's season with St. Louis hadn't been totally derailed by injury? There's three... How about we suspend disbelief long enough to think that Derek Anderson's dream season with 29 total touchdowns actually could have put in in Hawaii ahead of Big Ben in Pittsburgh? Well there you have it; four former Oregon State players in the NFL's all star finale.

Hey, I know it's a stretch, but it makes for a neat discussion.

Mike Riley Radio Interview

Oregon State coach Mike Riley appeared live on 1080 the Fan AM today in Portland. In case you missed it BeaverFanOnline listened for you and took notes.

We were able to jot down the questions asked of coach Riley and his responses. We were also able to translate his answers. Coach-speak and cliches be darned!

Is the EM Bowl better than the Sun Bowl?
I think it is for sure.... We earned our spot in this bowl... It's great for our fans and it's right in the heart of our recruiting area.
Tranlation:
Who wants to go to El Paso? Plus it would be nice to find some players from No. Cal.

On adversity early in the season? How do they bounce back to make something of a slow start to the season?
I wish we could bottle it and I wish we were better in September. Two things make us better each season: If the players are engaged and willing to be coached and coaches keep coaching.
Translation:
We traditionally stink in September. I wish we didn't, but that's been our pattern. Boy, it would be nice to get hot early in the year and carry it through from there. At least then we could shoot for some bowl other than the Sun Bowl.

What have you learned scouting Maryland?
They are very physical defensively. It looks like they have a system to use and they are sound. They don't give up big plays. I like how they play... and I saw them beat BC this year. Ralph Friegan is very experienced and alot of good things were said about what he did with San Diego (NFL). I like his approach at Maryland.
Translation:
Look... Maryland is way the heck across the continent from here. Why would I watch what the 6 placed ACC team is doing week to week. Other than that it's tradional for me to compliment them even if I know very little about what they do.

Your QB's were some of the worst early on this year. How did manage you win 8 games them calling the shots?
Startled... long pause. They were talented but they hadn't played. When they figured it out...much like a guy I had in Winnipeg, who finally figured, "If I don't mess it up we can win". Our guys learned that and gave our D a chance to shine.
Translation: Uh, yes... They did stink early on. It was embarassing to answer the same questions week after week. I mean how many times do you think I told them not to make questionable throws. It's really very simple... If you kind find something open just take the sack. Let our defense help us play the field position game and we eventually will score some points.

How are your QB's looking now?
Canfield looked very comfortable and he has worked hard on his rehab. He probably can't get hurt any further. He will be backup and Lyle will start.
We will stay status quo there...
Translantion: We have one a bunch of games and played well ever since the Cal game. Why would I risk the health of Canfield and upset the momentum we have created by taking Moeva out. If it ain't broke... don't fix it.

How will you approach the QB battle next year? How have you benefited with the extra month of practice?
Two things - One: We want to get to a bowl game each year as a goal as it shows we had a successful year. Two: we get a ton of bowl prep and we get to work on the development of our 29 redshirts. Some days we don't even play our starters in practice.
Translation: From where we started (again) this year we are plenty happy just to be in a bowl game. Also the extra practice helps us figure out if some of our young guys can play. We have some holes to fill with our seniors graduating and we could use evey second of practice there is to evaluate our players.

OSU's Schuening Receives Another Honor

Oregon State senior Offensive Lineman Roy Schuning may need to invest in a new cabinet or mantle piece.

That's because he just keeps adding to an already impressive collection of honors. Scheuning, who will start his school record 50th consecutive game in the Emerald Bowl next week, was selected for All-America honors by ESPN Monday. This award goes nicely with his All Pac-10 honors and the first team All-America award he received last week rom Pro Football Weekly.

Schuening his Beaver teammates are busy preparing for the December 28 Emerald Bowl against Maryland. OSU fans have already purchased 7,000 ticktes to the game.

Beavers to Play Penn State in 2008

Oregon State announced this week that Penn State has been added to the 2008 football schedule. OSU will play at 104,000 seat Beaver Stadium for the first time ever and will play against a Big-10 team for the first time since 1986.

The September 6 contest against Penn State and legendary head coach Joe Paterno will yield OSU a payout of anywhere from $800,000 and $1.1 million. The game will air on ESPN or ABC and will be the first of two Thursday night games for the Beavers next season.

I'm an Oregon State fan and by default a fan of all the school's current and former athletes. So one of the neatest things to see is when one of our former Beavers really MAKES it.

If you don't believe me, let's take Jacoby Ellsbury for example. Simply type in his name into Google or any search engine. The guy is totally blowing up...

Oregon State's Stutes On Watch List

Mike Stutes of the two time defending national champion Oregon State baseball team has been added to the 2008 preseason watch list for the Brooks Wallace Award. The award recognizes the top collegiate player.

Stutes, a senior from Portland was 12-4 in 2007 and has a career record of 20-6 at Oregon State the past two seasons.

Beaver Hoops Beats Bakersfield

Oregon State's basketball team got another win and head coach Jay John got another chess piece for his board.

The Beavers beat California Bakersfield Tuesday night 77 - 53 behind 18 points from Marcel Jones and three other Beavers tallied double figures. CJ Giles made his much anticipated debut getting 2 points and 2 rebounds before fouling out.

Beaver Baseball to Play at PGE Park in 2008

The Oregon State Beavers will play at the home of anothe Beaver team in 2008. That is... The OSU Beavers will play at PGE Park in Portland, home of the AAA Portland Beavers it was announced today.

The two-time defending NCAA champion OSU Beavers will play a three game series against Georgia startng Feb. 29 and a single game against the Univ. of Portland April 15.

Oregon State will play a three game series against the Bulldogs of Georgia BeaverFanOnline.com has learned. This will be a rematch of the 2006 College World Series game that Oregon State won in route to its first CWS title. The Beavers won the CWS title in both 2006 and 2007.

Beavers To Play Giles Tonight

The Oregon State University Beavers will take on UC Bakersfield tonight but much of the attention will be who is new to the OSU lineup.

That's becuase OSU will play CJ Giles for the first time. Giles a much heralded junior transfer from Kansas has been cleared to play academically. The 6-11 player is one of the newest faces to the Beavers this year and may offer the team a bona fide post player with size and skills they haven't had for a long time. Head coach Jay John remade the OSU roster in the offseason and Giles may be the biggest piece of what is hoped to be a much more competitive team.

Giles was a blue chip recruit from Seattle who played at Kansas but was let go from the team for off court issues. John offered Giles the chance to play at OSU after he got his academic house in order.

The Beavers are 4-3 on the year and have played a much more athletic style that has been possible with OSU teams of the recent past.

Giles Unlikely to Play Tonight For OSU

While OSU travels south to UC Davis for tonight's game, the X's and O's may not be foremost on the minds of the team.

That's because the much anticipated arrival of CJ Giles may be closer than ever. Giles a junior, transfer is nearing acamdemic clearance to join the team. It was announced this week that Giles will be taking his last final exam of the term today and that may be the last hurdle to getting him on the court.

Give Me San Franciso Any Day

... At least compared to El Paso.

I am hearing quite alot of static from some members of Beaver Nation who are disappointed, ney: downright upset that Oregon State got passed up by the Sun Bowl and will play in the Emerald Bowl.

Here's why this seems to be a bitter pill for some:
They are upset that we took third in the conference and seemingly got snubbed by the Sun Bowl. Wrong: We took third, yes... but we didn't get snubbed by the Sun Bowl. The correct answer is that we didn't get invited because we went there last year and the bowl can choose someone else if the same team is in line for year two.

They see the payouts and think we got a raw deal. While the payouts are indeed higher for the Sun Bowl ($1.9 million vs $750K) than for the Emerald it doesn't really matter. The payouts are convoluted at best. They basically serve as a barometer for how much you can spend on the game, getting the band there, etc. The proceeds from each bowl go into a communal pot. From there each team gets a slice. Even lowly Stanford and Washington get to share in the spoils of USC, ASU, OSU etc...

There are a bunch of reasons we really should be happy about the Emerald Bowl. Here are a few:
SF is obviously closer to Oregon and our fan base. To date 5,000 of our 11,000 tickets have already been sold. By contrast, the U of O will be lucky to sell 2,000 by kickoff (unless Nike buys up a bunch).
Northern CA is alot closer to any potential recruits that might be considering Oregon State. Trust me... there are many kids in El Paso we are after.

Last but not least... "Been there, done that." Do we really want to go to the same bowl two years in a row?

Bring on Maryland.

... getting to El Paso is MUCH harder.
Be thankful, buy those tickets to SF and see you at the game.

Beaver Baseball Gets Team Honor

The Two Time Defending National Champion Beaver baseball team was honored this week in Nashville as the 2007 NCAA Team of the Year presented by FieldTurf.

Former Major Leage All-Star Cal Ripken presented the award and Assistant coach Marty Lees accepted on behalf of the Beavers.

Sieverson, a senior from Bend replaced all conference performer Yvenson Bernard and had a huge day as the Beavers beat the Oregon Ducks in double overtime 38-31. Sieverson rushed 27 times for a career high 142 yard and a score. He got OSU on the board early with a 38 yard run on the first drive of the game.

Doggett led a swarming OSU defense with a career best 18 tackles (11 solo). He also scored a touchdown on an interception for the second year in a row in the Civil War game.

Oregon State players Yvenson Bernard and Alexis Serna were previous winners of the award this season.

You may want to hold on to Boston Red Sox gear bearing Jacoby's name or number. That is if the Sox and Twins pull the trigger on a rumored deal for star free agent pitcher Johan Santana.

Santana is desired by many teams and the competition for his services appear to be offered first to New York or Boston. The Twins are rumored to want two of these three young Red Sox players: Ellsbury, Jon Lester or Clay Buchholz. Oregon State is fresh off an exhilirating 38-31 double overtime victory last night in the annual Civil War over the University of Oregon Ducks. The Beavers (8-4) finished used win to take sole posession of the third place in the Pac-10's final week of the season. The third place team was to go to the Sun Bowl in El Paso, but that bowl passed over the Beavers because they played there last year.

The Christmas trip to California will be quite a change for the team from Maryland. They have just one player from the West Coast and the Emerald Bowl matchup will the be the first game against for them against a Pacific-10 Conference opponent since 1982.

Rivals.com’s All-Pac-10 Conference team was announced this week and two Beavers made the first team. Seniors Derrick Doggett (LB) and Roy Schuening (OL) were honored as first team selections while Yvenson Bernard (RB) was voted to the second team.

Freshman Darrell Catchings (WR) also received attention this week. The rookie was selected to the 2007 Sporting News Pac-10 All-Freshman Team.

Tomorrow's Oregon State/ Oregon game has bowl implications to be sure. An outside shot at the conference championship and a trip to the Holiday are possible, but not likely.

A better guess would be for the winner to get the Emerald Bowl in San Francisco.

On the field the game will feature two great defenses. What is really driving the buzz (or lack of buzz) about the game is who is missing. Both teams will play a backup quarterback and could be without their best tailbacks. The outcome..... who knows???

The annual grudge match pitting Oregon's top top divison I football teams will take place this Saturday in Eugene. It's Oregon State University at the University of Oregon in the 111th Civil War game.

We will have much more on the game this week but this year there is much riding on the outcome. Five Pac-10 teams are now tied for the top two spots. The winner of the Civil War game will likely get an invite to the Holiday Bowl in San Diego.

OSU Might Play Penn State in 2008

It's best to call this item a long shot now, but it looks like talks between Penn State of the Big 10 and Oregon State are taking place. At issue is the chance that the Beavers will travel to State College to play Penn State in Beaver Stadium in September of next year.

For the game to take place OSU would need to move some games now scheduled for that week to another date. The PAC-10 athletic directors would also need to approve the changes.

Beaver Win BIGG at WSU

Oregon State won at Martin Stadium in Pullman for only the second time since 1999 and the Beavers moved into sole possession of fourth place in the Pac-10. The Beavers (7-4, 5-3 Pac-10) forced eight Washington State turnovers to score 31 first half points and roll to a road rout 52-17.

Lyle Moeva started his second straight game and gladly accepted the excellent field possession bestowed on his offense by WSU and his mates on Oregon State's defense. Moeva was effective throughout throwing for 204 yards and a score. While Moeva looked out of synch last week against UW he had a good command of the offense when the game mattered. He continually hit receivers and the protection by the O Line was superb. OSU also ran for 200+ yards on the ground and pushed six touchdowns across while carrying the ball.

The Beaver defense forced six interceptions and a fumble into its fourth win in its last five games. A unsuccessful fake punt in the first quarter was also key in allowing OSU to mount a big road margin. Derrick Doggett accounted for two of the picks along with one each for five other Beavers.

Thought of the day:
Will OSU keep the Ducks from the Rose Bowl? If UO takes care of business this week agains UCLA we may get the chance to find out.

OSU travels to Pullman to try and go from bowl-eligible to bowl certain this week. It won't be easy as Martin Stadium - home of the Cougars - has not been a place where the Beavers have won. OSU is 1-11 in its last twelve trips to Pullman with the lone win coming in 1999. If they can win, the Beavers make it much more likely they will travel to play in December or January. The Cougars too have bowl aspirations. They need two wins and must win out this week against OSU and next in the annual Apple Cup against the University of Washington.

The Beavers will again rely on their defense and a ball control style on offense to set the tone. Don't try to stop me if you have heard that before... Backup QB + No playmaking receivers + beat up O Line = tough odds most weeks in the Pac-10.
If Lyle Moeavo can stay out of his own way and manage the game the Beavers have a chance. If the pace of the game picks up and WSU is allowed throw the ball downfield consistently look our Beaver fans.

Washington State's Alex Brink pushed his total passing yards over 3,000 yards last week. The Senior from Eugene has had some of his biggest games against OSU. He is more than capable of another especially as three OSU defensive backs sit out the first half on suspesion

OSU Kicker Wins Pac-10 Weekly Award

Senior placekicker Alexis Serna of Oregon State was named the Special Teams Player of the Week by the Pac-10 it was announced yesterday. The former All-American and two time Lou Groza semifinalist nominee kicked five field goals against Washington last Saturday in the 29-23 home win.

Serna, the NCAA active leader with 78 made field goals capped off a great career against Washington. In four years Serna has gone 18-for-18 on field goals and has scored 61 total points.

Serna was named a semifinalist for the Lou Groza National Award last week.

Pac 10 Weighs In on OSU UW Officiating

Saturday's Oregon State/ UW game in Corvallis was nothing if not intense. Starting QB Jake Locker of Washington was injured in a hard hit by OSU's Al Alfalava in the second quarter. Before and after that there were numerous plays where players from both teams appeared to push and shove (and worse) after the whistle.

The instant replay crew has been officially reprimanded by the Pac-10 it was announced today. The play in question occurred in the fourth quarter as Oregon State's Yvenson Bernard appeared to touch the ball on the goalline while his legs hit the ground. The ball then came out and what should at least been a review of the play was ruled a fumble.

The Pac-10 ruled that no further action would be taken against any of the players in the game. That appears to signal implied acceptance on the part of the offcials who clearly struggled to get control of the game.

On the Locker injury... Washington fans are right to question the hit. It doesn't seem to me that the OSU player intentionally led with his head. It looks instead like Locker ducked after Alfalava had committed to the hit.

Oregon State Beats UW in Emotional Battle

Oregon State beat the University of Washington Saturday night in Corvallis in a game that will be remembered for an injury to UW quarterback Jake Locker and concern by both teams about the officiating.

OSU jumped out to a 16-0 lead on Senior Night as 23 OSU players were honored in their last home game at Reser Stadium. Alexis Serna went 5-for-5 on field goals and ran his consecutive string of made field goals to 18 against the Huskies over his four career. Yvenson Bernard who missed the last game with an injurry ran for 149 of the OSU total of 249 on the night. Lyle Moevao started at QB for the Beavers and led the Beavers to a 26-10 lead in the second half. From there UW got two turnovers and two quick scores. They had the ball deep in OSU territory with less than two minutes to go but couldn't convert on fourth down.

Locker went to the hospital after a ferocious hit on Locker in the second quarter. On the play Locker was stretching for extra yards when he was hit by OSU safety Al Alfalava in part with the helmet. Locker lay motionless for 15 minutes and was transported by ambulance from the field to the hospital. He later returned with a neck brace and watched the remainder of the game.

Bernard ran the ball to the UW goalline but was ruled to have fumbled on the play as he touched the ball to the endzone. UW recovered the ball and ran to near midfield. OSU coach Mike Riley and many of the 45,629 in attendance booed loudly for minutes as the video screen at Reser Stadium showed Bernard on the ground before the ball came out.

Earlier three OSU defenders and one Washington player were ejected for fighting. That play and others seemed to be precipitated by an attitude by officials to let the players play.

OSU went to 6-4 on the year and have now qualified for bowl eligibility for the seventh year in the last nine.

OSU Coach/Players To Participate in All Star Game

Mike Riley and two members of his staff will coach in the 2007 Hula Bowl All Star Game in January. Riley will be joined by Offensive Coordinator Danny Langsdorf and Defensive Coordinator Mark Banker.

The coaches will be joined January 12, 2008 in Honolulu by senior players Roy Schuening and Jeff Van Orsow. Both players will play their last home game tomorrow at Reser Stadium as the Beavers host the University of Washington.

The coaches and players will be members of the West team in the 62nd annual contest designed to showcase senior college football talent.

Beavers Host Huskies in Home Finale

Oregon State plays host to Washington Saturday in the last home game of the 2007 season. Saturday's matchup pits the 3-6 Huskies at 5-4 Oregon State.

The Beavers stand at 3-3 in the Pac-10 and look to rebound from a poor road showing last week at USC. OSU lost 24-3 amid nine sacks and virtually no offensive prodcution. The injury bug bit the Beavers AGAIN as starting QB Sean Canfield went down with an injured shoulder. 'Oh no, not again, you might say'. As it stands now the list of Beaver starters lost this year is getting quite long...All America WR Sammy Stroughter, All Ammerica OL Jeremy Perry, All Conference RB Yvenson Bernard, OL Tavita Thompson, CB Keenan Lewis, DL Dorian Smith).... but enough about that. Lyle Moeva will start at QB. Yvenson Bernard surely wouldn't miss his last home game and Jeremy Perry may play.

Reasons OSU Will Take Down UW:
One more win and it bowl season. The Beavers have 5 and they need 6. Win this week, win next... go to Eugene feeling pretty good.
OSU has lost so many players to injury they are conditioned to it. It's almost like, "Another injury? So What?"
Yvenson Bernard will play. The Beavers get their best player and emotional leader back in the huddle.
The Beaver defense just refuses to give up an much. The #2 rushing defense in the country and the #10 overall defense in the nation is stingy and that's good.
OSU has Alexis Serna. The 2005 Lou Groza Winner and former all america has had some of his best games agains UW. The senior is now 8th all time in career scoring in the Pac-10 and 44 of those have come against the Huskies.
Washington is bad on defense overall. They are even worse against the run as they give up 202 + yards per game.

OSU Kicker Named Award Semifinalist

Oregon State placekicker Alexis Serna has been name a semifinalist for the Lou Groza award it was announced yesterday. Serna joins 20 other nominees for the award recognizing the nation's best kicker.

The Senior was the 2005 winner of the Groza award and holds OSU and conference kicking marks. The three finalists will be announced Nov. 19.

Riley said that Canfield's injured throwing shoulder would most likely keep him out of the lineup as the Beavers host UW in the last home game at Reser Stadium this year.

Beavers Fall to USC

Oregon State went to Los Angeles Saturday trying to keep the momentum going. The Beavers had won three conference games in a
row and found themselves playing a USC team that was 3-2 in the Pac-10 and seemingly struggling to show its usual dominance. So the Trojans were ripe for the
picking?

Not quite.

USC started senior QB John Booty who threw for 157 yards and two touchdowns on the day. The first quarter was close and Oregon State looked to make a game of things as the score read 7-3 USC.
But then the Trojans awoke, turning the game into a rout in a span of 7 1/2 minutes of the second quarter. It was 24-3 at half and the game was never in doubt from
there. Oregon State showed its usual defensive toughness but couldn't mount any kind of attack on offense on the day.

OSU was the victim of nine USC sacks and QB Sean Canfield seemed to be under fire all day. When he was able to throw he managed just 11-of-25 for 85 yards.
The Beavers had chances in the red zone twice in the first half. In the third quarter they again moved deep in USC territory only to have Canfield sacked on fourth down.

OSU at USC Prediction

"How about that defense!". Oregon State now ranks #1 in the NCAA in rushing defense and #13 in total defense. They lead the country in sacks with 34 and they are #8 in tackles for loss. While that's great, the USC defense may be even better.

The Trojans rank #1 in the Pac-10 in passing defense and #2 behind the Beavers in rushing defense. Overall they are ranked #4 in the country in total defense.

So both teams may struggle to move the ball. If that's the case it will be important for both teams to score when they can. USC helped the Beavers last year with 4 turnovers. It may take something similar this year for there to be many points.

It's not sexy or getting him on Sportscenter, but three good games in a row (all wins) by a young quarterback is great. We will take it. Canfield has cleaned up the mental miscues and learned to make decisions that keep drives going.

Another factor will be the reality of injuries. Yvenson Bernard may not play, but OSU won last year without him. The O Line will again be short-handed. Can they continue to gel against a great defense like that of USC?

This year it will take a bigger game from Canfield and possibly some points for the Beavs from the defense or an unsung player.

My guess: 21-14 Trojans.

OSU at USC Saturday

The Oregon State Beavers will travel to Southern California this Saturday to play the #13 USC Trojans. The two teams appear to be heading in opposite directions: OSU has won three straight games in Pac-10 conference play (Arizona, at Cal, Stanford) while USC has lost two of the last four. The two teams are tied for fourth in the Pac-10 at 3-2. Oregon State will try to win at USC for the first time since 1967 and will try to beat a top 25 team for the fourth time in a row. They Beat #3 USC and #24 Hawaii in 2006 and #2 Cal this year.

Here are some thoughts on what has allowed OSU to right the ship of late:

Beaver Defense: While the overall defense has been above average the run "D" in particular has been spectacular. In last week's 23-6 win over Stanford the Cardinal were held to -5 yards on the ground. The Beavers lead the conference giving up just 54.5 yards per game in conference. USC is second at 78.9. The Beavers rank number two in the conference for total defense behind the Trojans. In addition, OSU leads the conference in sacks with 33 for -263 yards. This week's game should be a great matchup if you like defense.

Turnover Margin: They are still seventh in the conference with -3 total total, but that number is heading in the right direction: +7 their past three games. USC ranks last in the conference at -5 overall.

Injury Bug: While OSU has lost two preseason All-American candidates in OL Jeremy Perry and WR Sammy Stroughter they have found players to plug those gaps. I can't say that we found a go to receiver but I can say that the offense as a whole has found a way to move the ball when needed. Perry may play this week at USC. Yvenson Bernard left the Stanford game with an injured shoulder. The news to date is that . The injury is not a seperation but Bernard is day-to-day. If he can't go Matt Sieverson or Clinton Polk will be asked carry the ball. Sieverson subbed for Bernard last week and gained 60+ yards. Polk ran for 100+ last year in the Beaver win over USC.

OSU Kicker Receives Acclaim

For the sixth time in his career, Alexis Serna of Oregon State has been recognized as a Lou Groza Award Star of the Week. Serna, a senior and former national All-America and 2005 Lou Groza Award recipient was recognized for his performance last week in a 23-6 OSU win over Stanford. In the game Serna was 3-of-3 on field goals and added to his consecutive extra points made streak that now stands at 127. With 12 more successful PAT's in a row Serna will set the Pac-10 record.

Pair of Beavers Square Off in NFL Today

Two former Oregon State stars squared off today in St. Louis as the Rams played host to the Cleveland Browns. The Browns are having one of their best starts in recent memory and came back from an early deficity to win 27-20. The win was the first on the road for the Browns this year and moved them to 4-3. The four wins match the team total from 2006. The Browns were once again led by former OSU quarterback Derek Anderson. Anderson was third in the NFL among passers with 14 touchdowns coming into the game. He had another good game today throwing for 248 yards and three touchdowns.

The Rams welcomed their best player back to the lineup today in former Oregon State star Stephen Jackson. Jackson, a pro bowl selection last year, missed the last four games with an injury. Jackson started the game and led the Rams to a quick lead but was injured again and left the game in the first half. He finished the day with 41 yards and one touchdown.

Red Sox Win Series: Ellsbury Continues to Shine

The Boston Red Sox won the World Series tonight with a 4-3 win in game four against Colorado in Denver. In the game Jacoby Ellsbury continued his strong play with two hits and a run scored. The rookie, two years removed from playing at Oregon State went 2-for-4 in the game and scored the first run of the game in the first inning. Ellsbury lead off the game with his fourth double of the series and scored on a hit by David Ortiz two batters later.

For the series Ellsbury batted .438 with four doubles. He continued to shine and contrubuted to his growing cult status with Red Sox Nation.

The Sox won their second World Series in four seasons after going through a famous 86 year Series drought.

Jacoby Ellsbury and the Boston Red Sox are now one win away from winning the World Series. The rookie from Oregon State went 4-for-5 on the day with two runs scored and two RBI. Boston scored six runs in the third inning and three in the eighth to take game three from Colorado 10-5.

Ellsbury had three doubles in the game and his day at the plate made him the first rookie in 61 years with four hits in a Series game. Ellsbury called his day, "A dream come true". Ellsbury batted in the lead-off spot and teamed with fellow rookie Dustin Pedroia to contribute seven of Boston's 15 hits.

Beavers Beat Stanford 23-6

Oregon State beat Stanford in Corvallis today behind three field goals from Alexis Serna, a workman-like effort from Sean Canfield and a stout defense that allowed -8 yards rushing on the day.

The Beaver defense held Stanford to 181 yards total offense and made four turnovers in the win. Canfield was sacked six times Saturday but wasn't guilty of any miscuses that resulted in turnovers. The Beavers won their third straight in conference play and they now stand tied for fourth in the Pac-10 with USC at 3-2.

Starting running back Yvenson Bernard left the game late in the first half with a should injurty. His status is unknown.

Former Beaver Earns Free Taco For All

Jacoby Ellsbury started in game 2 of the World Series for the Boston Red Sox and the former Beaver baseball star stole a base in the fourth inning. In the process he earned a free taco from Taco Bell for every American.

Former OSU baseball star Jacoby Ellsbury was 0-for-4 in Game 1 of the World Series Wednesday. He tallied a walk, scored a run and had an RBI while batting 0-for-4. Ellsbury started in center field after playing there on and off throughout the second half of the year.

The former Madras high school star played in 33 games for Boston in 2007. He batted .353 and swiped 9 bases. He reached base at a .394 clip.

Beavers Play Second in Intrasquad Series

The OSU baseball team scrimmaged and played to a tie in the second day of the Orange and Black World Series. In Tuesday's action at at Goss Stadium, the Black jumped out to a big lead but was tied by the Gray in a seven inning game.

The Black team jumped to a lead on RBI hits from Erik Ammon, Lonnie Lechelt and Jason Ogata. The Gray scored runs on RBI from Rob Folsom and Ryan Ortiz.

Game three of the series is scheduled for today at 2:45 p.m. at Goss Stadium at Coleman field.

OSU Offensive Line Loses Starter

The Oregon State Beavers will be without starting left tackle Tavita Thompson for the remainder of the season it was announced Tuesday. Thompson, a junior who has started each of the team's seven games this year has been ruled ineligible by the NCAA.

Thompson's abscense and the loss of all-Ammerica left guard Jeremy Perry who has been out since the first week will surely impact the Beaver offense. "That was a definite blow to us, Tavita has been playing well, and with Jeremy Perry still missing that’s two starters right there." said head coach Mike Riley.

Perry has been described as possibly ready to play this week. Ryan Pohl will step in at left tackle for Thompson. In other O-Line news, Andy Levitre went out of practice but he appears to be fine. In addition, Senior Roy Scheuning is sick with pneumonia. “He has been sick, but I think that as we go through the week I am anticipating Roy getting better each day.”

The two time defending national champion Oregon State baseball team took the field in Corvallis as part of the Orange and Black World Series yesterday.

The Black Team prevailed 5-3 in a six-inning affair under sunny skies at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. Daniel Robertson had two hits for the Black with a double and two RBI. Drew George drove in two runs as well.

Game two of the series is scheduled for today at 2:45 p.m.

Rich Brooks Makes U O Hall

Rich Brooks, former OSU player and assistant coach will be inducted into the University of Oregon athletics hall of fame it was announced this week. Brooks is currently the head coach of the # 8 Kentucky Wildcats who defeated number 1 ranked LSU last week.

Brooks played at OSU from 1959-62 under Coach Tommy Prothro as defensive back. As a senior, he nabbed five interceptions for a team that went 9-2 and won the 1962 Liberty Bowl.

After graduating from OSU Brooks coached the freshman team and was an assistant coach. Brook followed Prothro to UCLA and to the NFL's LA Rams. He then coached again at OSU as defensive coordinator in 1973. From there, Brooks coached with San Francisco in the NFL at UCLA again and finally 17 years at Oregon.

OSU Running Back is Pac-10 Player of Week

OSU running back Yvenson Bernard was named the Pac-10 Conference Offensive Player of the Week, it was announced yesterday.

Bernard helped the Beavers beat Cal last Saturday in a 31-28 upset win of the #2 ranked Bears. The senior back ran for 110 yards and scored two touchdowns. He also caught eight passes for 53 yards. Bernard scored the go-ahead touchdown for OSU in the fourth quarter.

OSU Football Garners National Publicity

Oregon State's football team earned recognition from across the country by upsetting #2 ranked California on October 13. One such honor was the Fiesta Bowl National Team of the Week it was announced yesterday.

OSU beat Cal in Berkley 31-28 on Saturday in a nationally televised game that went right down to the wire. Cal started a final drive with less than three minutes to go in the game and with no timeouts. They worked the ball inside the OSU 20 yard line but QB Kevin Riley was tackled in bounds as time expired.

Beavers Upset #2 Cal

Oregon State's football team shocked the country Saturday by beating the #2 Ranked California Bears in Berkley 31-24. Cal's furious attempt to comeback on the final drive began at the 6 yard line with no timeouts. The Kevin Riley-led Bears worked the ball to the 12 yard line but Riley was tackled while scrambling and time ran out before the field goal team take the field.

OSU won for the fourth consecutive time at Cal and evened their Pac-10 record to 2-2 with the win. The loss kept Cal from gaining the top spot in the country for the first time in 56 years. Earlier in the day #1 LSU lost in overtime to Kentucky.

Sean Canfield was 18-of-33 in the game for 186 yards and 0 touchdowns. Yvenson Bernard helped OSU win the time of possession battle with 33 rushes for 110 yards and two touchdowns.

OSU won the turnover battle in the game 3-1. Even better for Beaver Nation, Canfield reversed a trend by finishing the game with 0 passes intercepted. Canfield had led all NCAA quarterbacks with 13 passes intercepted.

If you have just returned from a vacation on the moon or finally woke up from a 10 year coma the name Mike Gundy may not mean anything to you. For the rest of us, Gundy is the now famous coach of the Oklahoma State football team. After a loss last month, Gundy chose not to recap the game but the flip out in response to a column written about one of his players in the local paper. It goes down as one of the most famous sports meltdowns of all time. Dennis Green, Jim Mora... eat your hearts out indeed.

NFL Week Five Honors

NFL Fans...Here's how your former OSU Beavers did in the pros in Week 5. The Bengals didn't play and Stephen Jackson was out again for the Rams, but others performed well.

The Week 5 Beaver Fan Online Player of the Week:

Derek Anderson, QB - Cleveland
The much maligned Andreson led his team against New England, one of the top teams in the NFL. Anderson was 22-of-43 for 287 yards and two touchdowns. He threw three picks and the game was never closer than 10 points in the second half. Pity poor Anderson... not a bad performance, but couldn't get anythign going for the Browns when it mattered in the first half.

Runners Up:
Nick Barnett, LB - Green Bay
Packers lose amidst a wash of turnovers against the Bears. Six tackles and three assists, 1.5 sacks.

Dwan Edwards, DT - Ravens
One tackle vs. 49ers.

Matt Moore, QB - Carolina
Moore saw his first action agains New Orleans. He got in for one series and was 1-2 passing for 43 yards. Carolina scored a field goal on the drive before Moore returned to the bench.

Former Beaver Matt Moore Sees First NFL Action

Former Beaver QB and NFL Rookie Matt Moore, now with the Carolina Panthers saw action this past week against the Saints. Moore played in the first quarter as starter Jake Delhomme was out and number two man David Carr also out briefly. Carr later returne to finish the game.

Moore led Carolina for one series and the panthers scored three points on a succesful field goal. Moore was 1-for-2 in his brief appearance and completed a 43 yard pass to Keary Colbert.

Delhomme is now on the injured reserve and will not likely return this year. Carr is now the number one QB and the Panthers are rumored to be in the market for seasoned veteran to take the number two spot.

OSU Star Receiver Out For the Season

Senior wide receiver Sammy Stroughter, an all Pac-10 and All-America candidate, will not return to the field this year it was reported by head coach Mike Riley today.

Riley answered Stroughter-related questions during his weekly press conference today, “He is going to pursue a medical redshirt. That would obviously mean he will no longer be playing this year, but we are confident it will go through.”

Stroughter has been battling a bruised kidney and will seek a medical redshirt. He missed the pre-season this year with personal problems and has played in just three games. In those contests, Stroughter is the team's second leading recevier and has scored three touchdowns.

Beaver Baseball Garners Second Recruting Honor

For the second time in the past two weeks the incoming class of baseball recruits at Oregon State was recognized in the top three.

It was announced today by Baseball America that OSU has the # 3 recruiting class in the country. Collegiate Baseball released a similar ranking last month and OSU took the number three spot there as well.

Oregon State won the last two NCAA baseball crowns and is the top ranked team in the Pac-10. LSU took the top spot from Baseball America and Florida State was number two.

Game 5 Recap

Things are certainly interesting for our Beavers. I could write about the good things the team has done, what's gone wrong... or both. Like me, you are bound to be frustrated. For the second consecutive week our team let a second half lead slip away to a good opponent, costing OSU a game they could have won. Make no mistake, UCLA is a good team, but the Beavs didn't make any plays in the second half and wilted.

OSU stands at 2-3 overall and 0-2 in the Pac-10. Things looked promising in the first quarter (deja vu anyone?) as the good guys opened up a 14-0 lead. Although it was good, it could have been better: a missed FG and a penalty wiped an additional 10 points from the scoreboard.

Neither team was able to mount any scoring chances during the second and third quarters.

OSU started the fourth quarter with a 14-12 lead, but then UCLA hit a 69-yard big play and had the lead. From there, the game took a nauseating turn as we fumbled a kick, followed by another and another. In betwen UCLA score another TD through the air and blocked an OSU punt.

Things to Ponder:
OSU got the running game back on track with 125 yards from Yvenson Bernard.

Turnovers - OSU has the most turnovers of any team in Division I. Turnover margin - 2.0. Sean Canfield has thrown 11 interceptions so far.

Efficiency - The Beavs were 1-14 on third downs.

Efficiency but no production - Canfield was 22-of-35, but had 2 interceptions and totalled just 146 yards in the air.

Second Half - After the first quarter OSU managed just 6 first downs and 101 yards on offense.

Sammy Stroughter Out for UCLA Game

Bad news for the Beavers today. Coach Mike Riley announced that number one receiver Sammy Stroughter will not play tomorrow against UCLA due to a bruised kidney.

Stroughter is an All-American receiver and punter for the Beavers and considered its most dynamic player. The team's leading receiver, Stroughter missed most of fall camp and the season opener with person issues.

Coach Riley said his best player is listed as, "day to day and week to week". Stroughter suffered the injurty against Arizona State last week.

Game 4 Recap

The Beavers are now 2-2 after falling to ASU 44-32 in Tempe last Saturday. The outcome was especially frustrating because the team played well on the road and was again derailed by turnovers. They held the lead for nearly three quarters of the game and really wasted a good effort with costly miscues.

Here's what did happen: OSU had a 19-0 lead in the first quarter and led for three quarters. The Beavers threw five interceptions and ASU rallied for a win in the fourth quarter by capitalizing on these miscues. The Beavers played great run defense (again) but gave up too many big plays in the passing gaem. It seemed that every time the Devils got the ball Rudy Carpenter would chuck it deep and they would score.

Here's what didn't happen: ASU couldn't run ball. ASU didn't turn the ball over. OSU didn't score in the second half to hold the lead. OSU couldn't defend against big plays which gave the home team extra momentum. OSU didn't take advantage of a great effort on the road against a good team.

OSU Baseball Recruits Named # 3 Class

The incoming class of OSU Baseball recruits have been ranked as the third best in all of Division I baseball by Collegiate Baseball it was announced today.

The recruits signed by head coach Pat Casey make up the best class in the Pac-10 and trail just LSU and Florida State nationally.
